This blog is about exploring music I love. Since I started my journey in the mid-seventies, music has become my big passion. First came the radio, followed by my older sister’s vinyl records. Then I started buying my own music and spending endless hours taping stuff on music cassettes from other records, CDs and my favorite radio shows. As a 13-year-old, I also picked up the guitar and subsequently the electric bass. I played the latter in two bands in my late teens and early twenties.
Fast-forward 40-plus years until today. While I haven’t been an active hobby musician in close to 40 years, I’m still as crazy about music as back then. Nowadays, it’s primarily listening to bands and artists from a fairly broad range of genres and going to concerts – and, of course, writing this blog! Every now and then, when I grab my guitar or bass or see some music act perform live, I still feel the itch to resume playing actively until reality sets in: my family, my job and mortgage, etc. – not to mention I’ve gotten pretty rusty!
My favorite decades in music are the ’60s and ’70s. In addition, I’ll always have a weak spot for the ‘80s, the decade during which I grew up. While my general preferences are ’60s and ’70s rock and pop, classic rock, soul and blues, to me great music can come in many styles and isn’t limited to those decades. In fact if anything, my taste has become more eclectic since I started this blog, including some contemporary music. While these days music I dig may be harder to find than in the ’60s and ’70s, a good deal of new music continues to be released week after week. One just needs to invest some time to discover it!
One important property I’m looking for in music is true craftsmanship, especially real instruments and real vocals. Music also needs to have real soul to touch me. And if in addition to all of that, great lyrics are part of the mix, even better!
Since I started writing this blog in June 2016, I’ve increasingly realized that music is a never-ending journey. In part, that’s what I love about it. As George Harrison once sang, “The farther one travels/The less one knows/The less one really knows.” He was a wise man!
While after all I’ve done I’ve probably gained some insights, I’m far from being some music encyclopedia, a musicologist or music critic, nor do I have any such aspirations. Therefore, I don’t do music reviews on demand. I also don’t write about music I don’t like. While I occasionally mention music-related products and brands, I’m not paid by anybody and don’t seek any such compensation. Unless stated otherwise, all expressed opinions are mine.
Please feel free to leave comments! All I ask is to keep feedback polite. At the end of the day, music is a highly individual experience, and there generally is no good or bad – just music we each dig and music that’s not so much our cup of tea.
